Part 4
Joel kissed Carrie on the cheek, then shook hands with Eric. âGood to see you again.â Laura gave him one of her fly-by hugs before diving to the floor to pet Bramble. Joel rolled his eyes. âShe doesnât come here to see me.â
âI can hear you, yâknow,â Laura retorted. Then she went right back to rubbing Brambleâs tummy while he lay on his back, all four paws in the air.
âThanks for the invitation.â Eric gazed at the interior. âThis is a really cute house.â
âWe like it.â
Finn laughed. âAnd weâll like it right up to the point where I finish building our dream house.â
Ericâs eyes widened. âOoh. Are there plans? Can I see them?â
âSure.â Finn glanced at Joel. âIf I can tear them away from Joel. Youâll have to excuse the watermarks. He keeps drooling over them.â
âI do not,â Joel declared indignantly.
âNate wonât be long,â Carrie told them. âAnd heâs bringing a friend from college. Actually, I think itâs one of his roommates.â
Joel flashed Finn a look, then pointed to the back door. âMegan and Lynne are out there, examining the new deck and complaining that this is the first time theyâve seen it.â He met Ericâs gaze. âHave you met my sister?â
Ericâs eyes twinkled. âNo, but Iâve definitely heard a lot about her.â
âItâs all true, every word,â Finn whispered.
âWhy are you whispering?â Joel demanded.
Finn arched his eyebrows. âBecause I like my balls where they are, thank you very much.â
Joel laughed. He noticed the large white box Carrie had placed on the table. âOh. Tell me you baked him a cake.â
âOf course, and before you ask, itâs chocolate, because duh, this is Nate.â
Finn pointed to the countertop. âGo help yourselves to something to drink. Weâve got everything. And I do mean everything. Iâm sure Joel was expecting at least fifty people to show up today.â
âCan I take Bramble out back?â Laura asked.
âWhy donât you all go out there, and weâll bring Nate and his guest when they arrive,â Joel suggested.
That was all it took to have Laura running toward the back door, Bramble at her heels, and Carrie and Eric following.
When they were outside, Finn arched his eyebrows. âSo how do we play this when he gets here?â
âWe act dumb. Carter doesnât need to know Nate has been talking about him. And we donât assume anything, you got that?â Joel narrowed his gaze.
âI got it.â Finn cocked his head toward the door. âI hear a car. I think the birthday boy is here.â
Without a word, Joel headed out onto the front porch. Nate was getting out of the car, and with him was a tall, slim guy with short blond hair.
He brought Carter. Joel hoped this meant what he thought it did.
âHey. Your mom and the rest of the gang just got here.â He waited for introductions.
âDad, this is Carter. Heâs a friend.â
Joel held out his hand. âThen heâs welcome here.â They shook. âIâm Joel, okay?â
âGood to meet you.â Carter appeared relaxed, whereas Nate was a little⦠bouncy.
âCome on in. Iâll introduce you to Finn.
